Scotland attracts more than £25 million for arthritis study

January 09, 2008

A clinical trial to compare different treatments for arthritis pain, the SCOT Trial, has been launched in Scotland, attracting more than £25 million of investment to the country.

It will use Scotland’s electronic patient record system to compare the long term safety of traditional NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen and diclofenac with the newer NSAID, Pfizer’s Celecoxib, within the Scottish NHS.

The study is being led by the University of Dundee in partnership with the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and will also have input from side-effects specialist professor Chris Hawkey from Nottingham University, the UK, and Professor Jesper Hallas of the University of Southern Denmark.

Scotland’s patient tracking system is among the best in the world, says Professor Ian Ford from the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics at Glasgow University. Denmark has a similar system.
